1. Get your Education and Public Outreach Materials into the Hot Little Hands of Science Teachers
Solar and Heliospheric Observatory’s (SOHO) Steele Hill, in a cooperative effort with National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) John Kermond (UCAR Joint Office for Science Support, Office of
Global Programs) has sent 15,300 copies of the “Dynamic Sun” CD to be included in a mailing to science teachers
throughout the nation. "Building a Presence for Science" is an initiative of the National Science Teachers Association
(NSTA). NSTA has secured funding from Exxon/Mobil. The program provides a key science contact in every school
to be the conduit for all science-related "goodies" that are available from government, industry and others. The program
is now entering Phase 2, and a Phase 3 is planned. NOAA is also sending teachers copies of the monographs "Our
Changing Climate" and "Our Ozone Shield." NSTA is providing labels and has given NASA the ability to mail in bulk
at a very favorable rate. They are adding a short paragraph on an enclosed letter giving teachers information about the
CD and where they can get additional copies.
NOAA plans to do more mailings, so if anyone is interested in using this vehicle as a way to get their EPO materials into
the hands of science teachers they should contact John Kermond at kermond@ogp.noaa.gov or call at (301)427-2089
(ext. 137).

2. Scientist Rewarded for Participating in Education and Public Outreach:
Goddard Astronomer Gets Science Writer’s Award
Dr. Sten Odenwald, education and public outreach manager for NASA's Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global
Exploration (IMAGE) mission (Code 633) at Goddard is this year's winner of the American Astronomical
Society/Solar Physics Division's Science Writer’s Award. Odenwald received the award for his
Washington Post
article about solar storms, which appeared last fall.
"I am very excited about getting a peer award like this from the solar physics community, given that I am an
astronomer who has spent the last 20 years writing about cosmology and other related issues," Odenwald said. "I hope
I can continue to support the goals of the Sun-Earth Connection community for the foreseeable future. This is definitely
an area of space science that the public needs to learn a lot more about."
Every year the Solar Physics Division solicits nominations from the solar science community in two categories;
one reserved for professional researchers and scientists and the other for science writers and journalists. Odenwald
was one of 27 possible recipients for this year's award in the science writer's category. Winners were announced
on June 19 during the Solar Physics Division's dinner meeting. Odenwald was presented with a certificate and a
cash award.

3. Lockheed Martin Hosts Solar Week 2000 - a Sizzling Tip for October 9-13.
Yohkoh/YPOP invites students to participate in the web-based Solar Week 9-13 October 2000. A week-long
series of web-based educational activities and games will be centered on understanding our nearest star. The
site is primarily designed to spark the interest of pre- and early teen girls in science by direct interaction with
female scientists at the forefront of solar research. However, all are welcome! Participants will interact with
leading experts as they learn about solar flares, the solar cycle, solar eclipses and solar observations. They will
see the latest images of the Sun from space, build their own sundial, make their own filter wheel, and measure
the speed of a solar storm as it hurtles towards the Earth. Register at http://www.LMSAL.com/YPOP/solarweek

4. Sun Earth Scientists’ Involvement Appreciated by Educators
At Goddard Summer Workshop
In August, Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), as part of their Education Division and Sun-Earth Connection
Education Forum activities, held a workshop focusing on SEC science content. The Sun-Earth Connection
Content Workshop was created for representatives from Educator Resource Centers (ERC), Aerospace
Education Specialist Program (AESP), Broker/Facilitators, and GSFC Education Program Office staff.
The goal was to give Goddard Service Region educators an opportunity to learn the science content, see
the products, and develop an action plan for dissemination. Participants particularly valued the face-to-face
time with scientists.
When asked about the most valuable aspect of the program, participants cited scientists’ willingness to talk
to them, the opportunity to hear from renowned scientists on the latest research discoveries on the sun, and
the hands-on activities. One participant offered, “I feel as though I have been to the sun and back! I am very
pleased with the learning curve, productivity, and the end product.”

5. Newsletter Sponsor Information--Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum
An integral element of the Office of Space Science (OSS) education and public outreach strategy is the
establishment of a network for space science to foster a wide variety of education and public outreach
activities. This network of institutions include (1) four Education Forums that serve as major centers for
space science education and public outreach in each of the four OSS Themes, and (2) a set of regional
Broker/Facilitators who, for example, help arrange collaborations between scientists and the education
community. The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) is a partnership led by Goddard
Space Flight Center and UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory. To learn more about SECEF and
the Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach program, go to
