1. NASA Space Science Education Resource Directory Unveiled!

On October 2, NASA's Office of Space Science announced the release of the Space Science Education
Resource Directory, an Internet on-ramp to top-quality educational resources produced by NASA's
Space Science Education and public Outreach programs.

The web-based directory provides easy access to high-quality, online space science educational
resources for teachers and students from kindergarten through high school. This first release of the
directory contains more than 100 electronic resources, including lesson plans, educator guides,
student activities, websites, and spectacular space science imagery such as auroras, comets, the
birth place of stars, and colliding galaxies. Educators, resource developers, and space scientists
have worked together to design a system that is scientifically accurate and easy to use.

This is a major accomplishment for the Space Science Education and Public Outreach Program.
The full text of the press release can be read at
<ftp://ftp.hq.nasa.gov/pub/pao/pressrel/2000/00-161.txt>

The Resource Directory can be found at <http://teachspacescience.stsci.edu>

The directory is already been receiving kudos:

"What a great job! Really well done! A terrific resource in a very clear and usable format."
--Rachel Winheld, Coordinator for the UC Berkeley Science Outreach Coalition

"I agree that this online resource is very good. Thanks to all who have worked on it."
--Jeanne Bishop, President of Great Lakes Planetarium Association

"Now that the Space Science Education Resource Directory is finally out, I am writing to express
my deep appreciation for all the work that [the Resource Directory Working Group] put in to make
it happen... I know that the kudos are starting to roll in. They are well-deserved."
--Jeff Rosendhal, Assistant Associate Administrator for Education and Outreach,
Office of Space Science, NASA HQ

"Wow, very nice Education Resource you guys at OSS unveiled. Very nice."
--Chuck Bueter, Great Lakes Planetarium Association member and astronomy teacher

2. Space Weather Article Featured as Cover Story in Physics World

If you missed the July issue of the British journal Physics World, the cover reads "Magnetic Storm Warning:
Space Weather At the Solar Maximum" by Dr. Janet Luhmann. It is strikingly illustrated with a soft X-ray image
of the Sun showing its glowing active regions, as detected by the YOHKOH spacecraft. The rousing headline
sends readers to an article inside by Dr. Janet Luhmann, the STEREO/IMPACT PI from UC Berkeley, who wrote
the featured piece, “Space Weather: Physics and Forecasts." You can find Dr. Luhmann’s article on-line at the
STEREO/IMPACT education and public outreach site at

3. Visiting Scientists Enhance Public Outreach at Maryland Science Center

The Maryland Science Center is the new home to the hottest museum exhibit in the solar system.
From September 27 to January 7, the public can explore the traveling exhibit called the "Space Weather
Center" at the science center in Baltimore. During those three months, scientists and education specialists
from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center will visit the Science Center each weekend to perform science
demonstrations and to answer questions about the Sun and how it affects life on Earth. Using current images,
movies, and science information - as well as several hands-on and minds-on activities - the exhibit explores
the nature of the Sun, the Earth, and the mysterious connections between them. Visitors will also learn how
spacecraft allow us to "see the invisible" and how the weather in space can affect life down here on Earth.
The exhibit was co-developed by the Space Science Institute (Boulder, CO) and many of the Sun-Earth
Connections missions based at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. For more information, visit

4. Newsletter Sponsor Information--Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum

An integral element of the Office of Space Science (OSS) education and public outreach strategy is
the establishment of a network for space science to foster a wide variety of education and public
outreach activities. This network of institutions include (1) four Education Forums that serve as major
centers for space science education and public outreach in each of the four OSS Themes, and (2) a set
of regional Broker/Facilitators who, for example, help arrange collaborations between scientists and
he education community. The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) is a partnership led
by Goddard Space Flight Center and UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory. To learn more about
SECEF and the Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach program, go to
