Now’s your chance to submit your outstanding OSS
education products and services to the first annual
NASA OSS Education Product Review, happening this spring-summer 2001. This
review, to be held yearly,
will focus on the formal and informal education products and resources you have
developed for elementary
through post-secondary audiences. All NASA Centers, grantees, contractors and
other NASA-sponsored
organizations are invited to contribute. Please forward this call to others who
may be developing space science
education products and resources for formal (elementary through post-secondary)
and informal education.
Additional information and the Product Submission Form can be found on the web
site:

The “Minority University Education and Research
Partnership Initiative in Space Science” kicked off its
first conference in Washington, DC, on February 22-23. The Minority University
Partnership Initiative’s
long-term goal is to enhance minority college and university participation in
space science. Another aim is
to increase the understanding of science, technology, and the role of research
by a broad and diverse segment
of the American population. The initiative emphasizes partnerships among the
Office of Space Science (OSS),
the space science research community, and minority institutions. Projects from
15 minority institutions were
selected for funding this year. The conference introduced these participants to
each other and to OSS staff,
and gave them a thorough tutorial on the OSS programs and on doing business with
OSS.
During
the conference, Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum team members met with the
Minority NRA
PIs. Jim Thieman spoke to the group about SECEF’s activities and expressed
SECEF’s interest in
collaborating with them. Troy Cline met with Richard Shope of JPL and several
other colleagues to discuss
space science outreach to American Indians. The conference also included a tour
of Goddard Space Flight
Center, which SECEF supported by providing talking points and inviting space
scientists and EPO leads to
speak to the visitors. All parties look forward to a productive and rewarding
partnership.

Participation
is heating up for the June 21 live webcast of the total solar eclipse in South
Africa. Currently,
the Sun-Earth Education Forum (SECEF) has 36 groups (museums, planetaria, &
schools) officially registered
to participate by building their own public events around the live webcast. Ten
groups are international —- from
Australia, Greece, India, Malaysia, Spain, Costa Rica, France, Tanzania,
and Mexico. Close to 20 scientists
have signed on to share their expertise with participating groups. See http://museumeclipse.org
to see how you
can get involved. SECEF is also delighted to have received official sponsorship
from the National Society of
Black Physicists (http://www.nsbp.org/), and
the event will feature African American scientists as role models
to engage and excite young people about space science and technology.

151 Goddard scientists and engineers——those
interested in reaching the education community with formal
and informal educational products and programs——participated in an Education
Summit at Goddard on
January 29, 2001. The summit, sponsored by Goddard’s Education Council, gave
them the latest information
on educational reform, product development, and the NASA Enterprises’
involvement in education. The
Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) team facilitated small group
discussions and shared their
successes through an exhibit called ”Help Your Communities Make the Sun-Earth
Connection.” Jim Thieman
of Goddard explained how the Office of Space Science’s Education Forums and
Broker/Facilitators form
an experienced support network that connects the science and education
communities; he gave special emphasis
to the Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum.

An integral element of the Office of Space Science (OSS)
education and public outreach strategy
is the establishment of a network for space science to foster a wide variety of
education and public
outreach activities. This network of institutions include (1) four Education
Forums that serve as major
centers for space science education and public outreach in each of the four OSS
Themes, and
(2) a set of regional Broker/Facilitators who, for example, help arrange
collaborations between scientists
and the education community. The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) is
a partnership
led by Goddard Space Flight Center and UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences
Laboratory. To learn more about
SECEF and the Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach program, go
