 1. AGU K-12 EDUCATION STANDARDS FOR EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE
------------------------------------------------------------

At its December meeting in San Francisco, the American Geophysical
Union Council adopted a position statement in support of K-12
education standards for Earth and space science. A copy of the
policy statement can be found at this link:
http://agu.org/sci_soc/policy/earthspace_educ.html

------------------------------------------------------------
 2. TRACE/SOHO EXHIBITION AND PUBLIC PRESENTATION IN DC ON 2/19
------------------------------------------------------------

From: "David Smith" <DHSmith@nas.edu>

To mark the opening of the exhibition "Sunscapes: Images of our
Magnetic Sun," at the National Academy of Sciences, Alan Title--
Senior Fellow, Lockheed-Martin Advanced Technology Center--will
deliver a lecture, "The Science of the Sun," at 7:30 p.m. on
Tuesday 19 February, in the Lecture Room at the National
Academies' headquarters at 2101 Constitution Ave, NW, Washington,
D.C., 20418. Both the lecture and the exhibition are open to all
and free of charge. For more details see "Exhibitions" at
http://www4.nationalacademies.org/nas/aiashowtime.nsf

------------------------------------------------------------
 3. SEC ROADMAP MEETING: INVITATION TO THE COMMUNITY FORUM MAR. 4-5
------------------------------------------------------------

From "Fuselier, Stephen A" <stephen.a.fuselier@lmco.com>

This year, the Sun Earth Connections (SEC) Division will conduct
its 3rd Roadmap exercise. Every three years, the division must
update its strategic plan, and the input to this plan comes from
the Roadmap Committee report. The strategic plan and the roadmap
describe SEC science objectives and, ultimately, the SEC strategic
missions (e.g., Stereo, Magnetospheric Multiscale, Solar Dynamics
Observatory) that address these science objectives. This year's SEC
Roadmap Committee chair is Stephen Fuselier and its co-chair is
Thomas Duvall.

The roadmap committee invites the SEC community to an open forum
to be held in the vicinity of the Goddard Space Flight Center (the
location will be announced at a later date) on 4, 5 March 2002.
The purpose of this two-day forum is to give the SEC community the
opportunity to provide direct input into the roadmap process.
Space science education specialists are welcome. Roberta Johnson
of UCAR is the EPO person for the roadmap. She can be reached at
  rmjohnsn@ucar.edu

 4. SUN-EARTH DAY ON MARCH 20, 2002 – THE LATEST
------------------------------------------------------------

The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) team is hard at
work on the upcoming Sun-Earth Day on March 20, 2002. Sun-Earth
Day is a national celebration of the Sun, the space around the
Earth (geospace), and how all of it affects life on our planet. In
classrooms, museums, planetaria, and at NASA centers, we plan to
have a blast sharing stories, images, and activities related to the
Sun-Earth connections and the views of the Sun from Earth.

     => WEBSITE

For the latest information, activities, and available materials,
check out the website at http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/sunearthday/
New items are being added every day, including a Native American
component. This section of the website contains numerous student
resources about Native American cultures and the connection to
the science of the Sun. Biographies, activities, stories, and
activities are included. Numerous plans are under way for local
outreach activities, too.

Teachers can find student activities on the website under “Featured
Activities 2002.” And if a classroom teacher does the activity with
their students, we request that they send us a three-minute video
of the results by March 1. We will then share these during the webcast.

Check out the “Sun Earth Day Resources” section for posters,
bookmarks, etc.

“What’s Happening 2002” – We will be adding to this section as we
receive information. If you are planning a Sun-Earth Day activity
or event, please let us know!

     => WEBCAST

The Sun-Earth Day webcast is scheduled for March 20, from 1-3 EST.
NASA QUEST will host again this year, with Paul Mortfield. It will
begin with a Spring Equinox Ceremony on Harney Peak in the Black
Hills. This annual Native and non-Native event traditionally marks
the beginning of the new year for all life. Scientists and students
will join in the celebration of the equinox at NASA Centers and
museums across the United States. The webcast script can be viewed
on the website.
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/sunearthday/webcast.htm

Three main activities will be featured during the webcast. Students
will be present in the auditorium, as well as in taped segments
of middle and elementary students. NASA TV will also air the
webcast for better quality, especially at NASA Centers and museums
for special events.

=> NASA CONNECT: A SOLAR BLAST

NASA Connect: A Solar Blast starts airing on March 28th at 11 ET
on NASA TV and PBS/Education Channels. Our site links to theirs
under “Featured Activities 2002.”
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/sunearthday/nasacon.htm

The NASA Connect activity was created by Michelle Larson of the
HESSI mission. Sten Odenwald of the IMAGE mission, Eric Christian
of ACE, Michelle Larson of HESSI and Terry Kucera of SOHO are host
scientists for the program. This will also be featured on the
Sun Earth Day website.

 5. CONGRATULATIONS, HESSI, ON A SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH!
------------------------------------------------------------

On February 5, at 20:58 UT, the long-awaited High Energy Solar
Spectroscopic Imager (HESSI) was air-launched from a L-1011
Jetliner and blasted into space 40,000 feet over the Atlantic
Ocean. The HESSI mission will study the high-energy x-ray and
gamma-ray eruptions from solar flares. The HESSI science team
believes the new solar probe will be able to image a thousand or
more solar flares during its two-year primary science mission.
HESSI is the first NASA mission in more than a quarter of a
century to be designed, built, as well as operated by a university
and its partners.

Newsletter Sponsor Info: Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum
------------------------------------------------------------

An integral element of the Office of Space Science (OSS)
education and public outreach strategy is the establishment of
a network for space science to foster a wide variety of edu-
cation and public outreach activities. This network of
institutions include (1) four Education Forums that serve as
major centers for space science education and public outreach
in each of the four OSS Themes, and (2) a set of regional
Broker/Facilitators who, for example, help arrange collab
orations between scientists and the education community.
The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) is a partner-
ship led by Goddard Space Flight Center and UC Berkeley’s
Space Sciences Laboratory. To learn more about SECEF and the
Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach program,
