 1. Sun-Earth Day, Spring 2003: Live from the Aurora
Documentaries, Webcasts, Student Observation Network, Museum Events!

------------------------------------------------------------

This spring’s event is a collaboration between Passport to

Knowledge and the Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum. There

are exciting opportunities for both the formal and informal

education communities leading up to Sun-Earth Day on March 18th.

For instance, a documentary titled, Auroras—Living with a Star,

will be airing on February 11, 2003 from 1-2 p.m. ET, and will be

divided into short video segments by topic and placed on our

website at http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/sunearthday. Each

topic will be supported with a series of activities, including

a web quest!

Two weekend opportunities are available for museums, planetariums

and science centers to participate in a live webcast on February

22-23 and again on March 1-2. Both will be carried on local PBS

stations and NASA TV. Five representative museums will participate

interactively, from Alaska to the east and west coasts, at 1:00-3:00 am

AK Time. These weekend events will offer the general public,

parents and students a chance to see the launch of a sounding

rocket and an auroral event. Museum participating in ‘sleep-over’

events will be supported with activities, scientist interviews,

and astronaut reactions to the light shows provided by our Sun.

On March 18th ,1-2 p.m. ET, Passport to Knowledge will bring

a live webcast called, “Live From the Aurora,” to classrooms

and NASA centers through NASA TV and local PBS stations. Students

will be able to visit with scientists and other students to learn

more about the aurora and local cultures in Alaska.

Finally in April, we will again make our mathematics connection

with NASA Connect through a new program called, “Dancing in the

Night Sky.”  Scientist researchers working with the IMAGE and POLAR

spacecrafts will join the NASA Connect program in Norway to share

their growing knowledge about the aurora.

Our new Sun-Earth Day website is now on-line where you can find

additional activities, web quests, background reading, important

links, student activities and how to register.

 2. Sun-Earth Day On-Line Multimedia Gallery

------------------------------------------------------------

We are excited to announce the creation of our new Sun-Earth Day

on-line Multimedia Gallery! This multifaceted resource, created

through a partnership between SECEF and IDEUM, provides users with

quick and exiting information about the Sun-Earth Connection. The

gallery is divided into 3 main categories: Scientist Interviews,

Sun-Earth Illustrations, Live Solar and Aurora Images.

asked questions in the following areas: the Sun, Space Weather,

the Aurora. By clicking on any one of the questions, users are

instantly provided with an audio/video answer from one of our

Sun-Earth Connection scientists: Dr. Art Poland, Dr. Sten

Odenwald, Dr. Nicola Fox.

resolution images depicting the story of the Sun-Earth

Connection. After users click on their image of choice

they are provided with textual information about that

image and the ability to ZOOM in for a closer look!

live/updated images from the following sources: IMAGE,

IMAGE POETRY, SOHO/LASCO, and the Big Bear Solar Observatory.

As with the ‘Sun-Earth Illustrations’ sections users

have the unique ability to ZOOM in up to 500% on interesting

solar features!

3. 2002 Sun-Earth Connection roadmap available

------------------------------------------------------------

From:  Stephen A. Fuselier (Chair, SEC Roadmap team)

The Sun-Earth Connection (SEC) Roadmap team has completed the 2002

SEC Roadmap. The final draft of the Roadmap is available online at

the SEC Roadmap Web site "http://sec.gsfc.nasa.gov/sec_roadmap.htm".

On the website, there is an option to download the version with or

without the mission descriptions (10 MB versus about 1 MB).  Also

provided on this website is the opportunity to submit comments on

the report.  Over the next two months, members of the community

will be preparing for a November meeting where the roadmaps from

the Office of Space Sciences directorates will be incorporated into

the OSS Strategic Plan for 2003. The SEC Roadmap is an important part

of our directorate's input into this Strategic Plan.

 4. Shimmering New Auroras Book for Children (on-line and in print)

------------------------------------------------------------

Have you seen the auroras, those mysterious, colored curtains

of light, high in the night sky? For more gorgeous visions,

check out our new book called Auroras: Mysterious Lights in the

Sky, appearing in both on-line (using Flash animation) and print

versions. Auroras is directed at primary school children, as

well as their parents and teachers (it includes a special section

of Science Facts at the end of the book). The striking aurora

images are real – in the on-line version they are from NASA

spacecraft, and in the print version the images are real

photographs taken by Jan Curtis. A collaboration between

SECEF and Ideum, it was made in support of the next Sun-

Earth Day on April 18, 2003

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/sunearthday ,

whose theme is “Live from the Aurora.”  The print version of

Auroras: Mysterious Lights in the Sky will be released shortly.

The on-line version can be found at

Newsletter Sponsor Info: Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum

------------------------------------------------------------

An integral element of the Office of Space Science (OSS)

education and public outreach strategy is the establishment of

a network for space science to foster a wide variety of edu-

cation and public outreach activities. This network of

institutions include (1) four Education Forums that serve as

major centers for space science education and public outreach

in each of the four OSS Themes, and (2) a set of regional

Broker/Facilitators who, for example, help arrange collab-

orations between scientists and the education community.

The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) is a partner-

ship led by Goddard Space Flight Center and UC Berkeley’s

Space Sciences Laboratory. To learn more about SECEF and the

Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach program,
