 1. SOLAR WEEK 2004 - BRING YOUR CLASSROOM ON BOARD

    FOR APRIL 12-16, 2004.

------------------------------------------------------------

The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) welcomes all

students and teachers wishing to participate in Solar Week,

April 12-16, 2004. The week-long series of web-based educational

activities and games will be centered on understanding our

nearest star: the Sun.

The site is primarily designed to spark the interest of pre-

and early teen girls in science by direct interaction with

female scientists at the forefront of solar research. All

participants, male or female, are welcome!

Participants will learn about solar flares, the solar cycle,

solar eclipses and solar observations. They will see the latest

images of the Sun from space, build their own sundial, make

their own filter wheel, and measure the speed of a solar storm

as it hurtles towards the Earth. There is also a strong careers

component. This spring's Solar Week will include a section focusing

on the upcoming TRANSIT OF VENUS across the face of the Sun on

JUNE 8.  Register or drop in at www.solarweek.org

------------------------------------------------------------

 2. NASA PORTAL WEBSITE -- A STELLAR OPPORTUNITY FOR MISSIONS

AND RESEARCH PROGRAMS TO SHOWCASE YOUR KEY NASA EDUCATIONAL

    INITIATIVES

------------------------------------------------------------

WWW.NASA.GOV -- THE NASA PORTAL

Think of the education sections of the NASA Portal as a

high-visibility on-line magazine, wherein missions and research

programs can highlight their successes.(In January 2004 these

sections reported 1.9 million page views!)

The educational sections of the NASA Portal consist of the

For Kids, For Students, and For Educators areas. These are

directly accessible from the NASA home page (www.nasa.gov)

through the main navigation buttons located in the upper

left side of the main page.

The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum has volunteered to

contribute articles for the months of May 2004 ("Humans in

Space”), and August ("Safety"). If you have educational products

or programs you would like to highlight, please contact

Karin Hauck (karin@ssl.berkeley.edu) with your ideas. For May's

edition, please get in preliminary touch by April 14th!

You will be expected to format your article in adherence with

the guidelines in this document: ftp://sunearth.ssl.berkeley.edu/NASA_portal_guidelines.pdf

Compelling images, animations or illustrations are encouraged.

The education team of the NASA Portal has final approval

over what is published, and can help with editing. But for

collection purposes, please send to Karin Hauck (email above).

For examples of some articles, look at the CHANDRA and SPITZER

links. http://www.nasa.gov/missions/science/f_supernovae.html

An integral element of the Office of Space Science (OSS)

education and public outreach strategy is the establishment of

a network for space science to foster a wide variety of edu-

cation and public outreach activities. This network of

institutions include (1) four Education Forums that serve as

major centers for space science education and public outreach

in each of the four OSS Themes, and (2) a set of regional

Broker/Facilitators who, for example, help arrange collab-

orations between scientists and the education community.

The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) is a partner-

ship led by Goddard Space Flight Center and UC Berkeley’s

Space Sciences Laboratory. To learn more about SECEF and the

Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach program,
