 1. ANCIENT OBSERVATORIES, TIMELESS KNOWLEDGE

------------------------------------------------------------

Join NASA’s Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) in the new

year as we explore the knowledge, worldviews and technology of

ancient -- and modern -- “Sun Watchers.” Our  theme for 2005 focuses on

the fascinating human-made solar alignments created long ago to

mark the equinoxes, solstices and other celestial events. We will look

at the "ways of knowing" of yesterday and those of our satellites

nd observatories today. We are working with an expert advisory

committee of Native American science and culture experts and

Sun-Earth Connection scientists.

As always, Mission scientists, educators, and Education and Public

Outreach professionals, and other interested parties, we would love your

participation, in terms of time, expertise, or products and materials!

In partnership with the Exploratorium, Ideum, and NASA Connect,

SECEF will produce video and webcasts for formal and informal

education (museums, etc) audiences nationally. This year’s programs

will feature dramatic footage from Chaco Canyon (New Mexico),

Hovenweep (Utah), and Chichen Itza (Mexico). The December 21

(winter solstice) webcast  at Chaco Canyon can be seen at

http://www.exploratorium.edu/chaco/. The other live event will be

webcast on March 20, 2005 (the spring equinox), from the Yucatan in

Mexico.

Sun-Earth Day on March 20, 2005 (http://sunearthday.nasa.gov) will

feature a rich variety of materials around this theme. Register and

receive a packet of information on Sun Watching across the ages.

Also, for more knowledge and great visuals on ancient

observatories, visit our new media viewer at

http://traditionsofthesun.org  Note: This is similar in format to our

Sun-Earth Media Viewer, which won the prestigious Pirelli

International Award for best "Environmental Multimedia Project."

Our goal for 2005 is that all participants will benefit from these

key understandings:

* The Sun is a dynamic, magnetic star that impacts the Earth and

other planets in our solar system.

* Seeking to understand the mysteries of the Sun has been a primary

motivation for Sun watchers over time.

* Human beings use technology (past, present, and future) to

understand the Sun and the Universe beyond.

Light has always provided a means of investigating the Universe.

* Human beings from diverse cultures have viewed the Sun as the

source of life.

An integral element of the Office of Space Science (OSS)

education and public outreach strategy is the establishment of

a network for space science to foster a wide variety of edu-

cation and public outreach activities. This network of

institutions include (1) four Education Forums that serve as

major centers for space science education and public outreach

in each of the four OSS Themes, and (2) a set of regional

Broker/Facilitators who, for example, help arrange collab-

orations between scientists and the education community.

The Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum (SECEF) is a partner-

ship led by Goddard Space Flight Center and UC Berkeley’s

Space Sciences Laboratory. To learn more about SECEF and the

Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach program,
