2. SUN-EARTH DAY 2006 – ECLIPSE: IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT
------------------------------------------------------------
Sneak peek of Sun-Earth Day 2006 – “Eclipse: In a Different Light”
For those of you who want an early jump on exciting E/PO events for
next year, we’re excited to tell you that the theme of Sun-Earth Day
2006 is “Eclipse: In a Different Light.” On March 29th, 2006, a
total solar eclipse will be visible from parts of Brazil, the
Atlantic Ocean, Africa, and Central Asia. In collaboration with
the Exploratorium, we plan to provide live and free video of this
total eclipse via satellite and webcast. To find out more about
this event and related resources, please visit:
http://sunearthday.nasa.gov/ . This website will be updated
regularly starting later this summer as more details become
available.
It’s never too early to start planning for Sun-Earth Day! If you

3. “SUNWORKS” ART CONTEST FOR ARTISTS EIGHT TO EIGHTY!
------------------------------------------------------------
SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) is pleased to announce
that it is sponsoring a monthly art contest called “SunWorks” for
students and adults to enter. It will run for 10 months. This is
being held as a part of SOHO’s 10th anniversary celebration, which
will occur on Dec. 2, 2005. (SOHO is a NASA and European Space Agency
spacecraft that studies the Sun.) The theme will focus on the Sun,
of course. The artwork must include the Sun as an important element
in the submission, at least in concept, but does not have to be the
only element. Each month will have a Winner and Runner-up in the
three categories of entries: Grades 4-8, Grade 9-12, and adults.
At the end of the contest, a panel will select a Grand Prize Winner
as well as 2nd and 3rd place winners.
For contest and prize details go to:

4. NEW SPACE WEATHER RESOURCE DEBUT
------------------------------------------------------------
Before you leave for summer vacation (oh yeah right!!), just
wanted to let you know that there is a new website about the
human impacts of space weather and solar storms that will
make an interesting summer read. It is unique because it
deals at length with all of the many impacts that space
weather has, with full documentation for the claims, and
upcoming resources on current research. It’s a great web resource
for use by institutional programs, because it explains why we
need better storm forecasting methods than we have today, and
what will happen if we don’t get them soon. It is not intended
as a strictly student resource, but a High-end resource for the
professional community (teachers, scientists, Congressional
Staffers etc). To spread the word, please recommend that its
link be posted on webpages that you 'control' or if you can
recommend pages that this resource should be linked from,
please contact Sten Odenwald [odenwald@mail630.gsfc.nasa.gov]
Our ability to convince teachers and policy makers that space
weather is vitally important is highly correlated with our
ability to create compelling arguments for this issue. This
web resource is an attempt at graphically defining the
problem and its consequences.
It is located at www.solarstorms.org
and also at www.spaceweather.us.
Enjoy!
