1.  NASA AND THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE CAMP OUT IN YOSEMITE

FOR “EARTH TO SKY” E/PO WORKSHOP

------------------------------------------------------------

The fruitful collaboration between NASA and the National Park

Service that began with our From Earth to Sky Institutes at Goddard

Space Flight Center and Ames Research Center last October continues

to bring good opportunities to both the Parks and NASA. A contact

we made at Earth to Sky led to an invitation for members of the

Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum to spend a packed-full day at

Yosemite National Park in California with 25 park service inter-

preters. Our day was part of Yosemite’s two-week training for their

seasonal park interpreters, who are looking for more ways to engage

and educate the public. We trained the interpreters in several Sun-

Earth Connection activities they could do with park visitors, with

an emphasis on quick, interesting, hands-on activities. Included

were a session on “The Reasons for Seasons,” solar observing with

H-Alpha-filtered telescopes and also with sunspotters (simple

solar telescopes we often use with grade-school kids), shadow-

observing activities, ultraviolet beads and paper plate sundials.

The interpreters were very enthusiastic and the day of training

lasted fourteen hours!

And from this training session another professional development

opportunity presented itself. We have been asked to return to

Yosemite do a day of formal education SEC trainings with 150-300

Outdoor and Environmental Educators during their fall conference

later this year.
