1. ACE Releases New Data Products
and Celebrates its 10th Anniversary
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Interplanetary magnetic field data from the MAG instrument on
the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft are now
available at 1-second time resolution from the ACE Science
Center: http://www.srl.caltech.edu/ACE/ASC/level2/index.html
These 1-second data complement the 16-second, 4-minute, and
hourly data from MAG that have been available for some time.
Every effort has been made to ensure that the timestamps for
these high-resolution data are properly calibrated, including
range-delay effects, leap-seconds,
etc.
Energetic particle data from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer
(SIS) instrument on ACE have been completely reprocessed to
take advantage of better understanding of the instrument
operation, and better analysis techniques. The new data are
available from the web address given above. The biggest changes
are evident in the helium and oxygen intensities. More details
are available in the online SIS data
release notes.
On August 25, 2007 ACE celebrates 10 years in space. Since early
in 1998 ACE has been orbiting the the L1 libration point which
is a point of Earth-Sun gravitational equilibrium about 1.5
million km from Earth and 148.5 million km from the Sun. From
its location at L1 ACE has a prime view of the solar wind,
interplanetary magnetic field and higher energy particles
accelerated by the Sun, as well as particles accelerated in the heliosphere and the galactic regions beyond. The spacecraft has
enough propellant on board to
maintain an orbit at L1 until ~2022.
For questions and comments about the online ACE data in general,
please contact Andrew Davis at the ACE Science Center
(ad@srl.caltech.edu). For questions about the MAG data, contact
Chuck Smith at UNH (chuck@briaxa.sr.unh.edu). For questions about
the SIS data, contact Christina Cohen at Caltech
